When daughter Frances Vineyard approached her dad, Earl Cruze, about creating the first ever Cruze Farm Corn Maze just over a month ago little did he know the plans she and mother Cheri had in mind. The family thought of every little detail, it’s hard to believe that it’s their first Fall event.

We found the farm easily after following the small white signs from the Strawberry Plains exit off I-40. We parked in the field and made our way to the ticket booth. Wrist bands for the corn mazes and hay ride attached we set off to explore.

We wandered past the animal enclosure and saw the cutest baby animals and got to see Jersey Heifers and the English Baby Doll Sheep.

The kids ran over to the straw maze (great place to snap some pictures). Then headed over to wait their turn for the pedal tractors. Watch out for little hitchhikers in your tractor trailer!

Last stop before the corn maze were the inflatable horses. The kids clung to their backs and bounced down the makeshift tracks.

There’s not one, but two corn mazes. The children’s one is adorable. Select your straw hat and a bucket and get started. Along the way, you’ll pick some corn, put some kernels in the feed dish for the chickens and the cows and collect your milk. It’s an easy walk even for the toddlers.

Once we completed the educational maze the kids were rewarded with a small cone of Cruze Farm Girl Ice Cream. They sat at the tiny picnic tables and we enjoyed the shade of an umbrella at one of the comfier tables.

If you’re feeling more ambitious and your children are slightly older, say pre-school and up, why not try the larger corn maze and see if you can find up to five missing country music stars. I won’t ruin the details, but they’ve gone to a lot of trouble, you’re bound to get a chuckle out of the famous music stars alter egos.

Next, we waited on the hay ride (which was included in the cost of admission), and took a leisurely ride out to the pumpkin patch. The kids must have picked at least four pumpkins each before deciding on ‘the one’. The prices were on the bottom of each pumpkin and we paid for them before we carted them back to the car. Just a tip, bring a big reusable tote to make the task easier.

Hungry, I went over to order food from the Cruze Farm food truck that’s often at the Market Square Farmer’s Market on Saturdays and ordered a feast for the family. Hubby staked out a picnic table under the large shady tent. (Cheri confided that they had purchased all of the picnic tables just for this event and painted each and every one of them a barn red). The kids had to be dragged away from the pit of corn kernels that they were digging in to eat.

I know, I’m not meant to say this, but the food was my absolute favorite part of the event. Hubby and my older son feasted on the burgers, $5 each, my younger son had the hot dog and I had the fluffy biscuits with eggs and Benton’s bacon for just $2. Not wanting to too greedy we split a thick chocolate milkshake. You could also enjoy a farm feast of pinto beans, fresh cornbread and coleslaw, we may have to go back to sample more of the food before the event ends. The kids had a great time churning the milk into butter while they waited for their food to be brought to the table.
